Pleco not eating zucchini… What should I do to help them eat it?
January 2nd, 2010 | by admin |Hey guys… I’ve had 2 plecos for about a month now. Yes, I’ll admit, I assumed they were bottom feeders and would have enough food to eat on the bottom. But I have 2 small koi like gold fish that keep the floor clean.
Aside from that, plecos don’t really eat other fish droppings anyway.
I did some research and it turns out – aside from algae pellets, they eat all kinds of vegetables. So I bought a zucchini, then I stuck a stainless fork through a SLICE and sunk it into my aquarium…
The plecos are ignoring the zucchini. Anything I can put on/do the zucchini to make it more attractive?
Also I just added 3 new male platy to my tank (joining my 3 females platy).
It’s a 90 gallon tank, I don’t think they’d have that much effect on the plecos, would they?
My plecos are only 3" long and I’m looking forward to properly feeding them in the future. All help is welcome.
I rate you good on your answers ![]()
You can Boil it, It works for Otocinclus Catfish I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for Plecos.

Plecos can eat algae (algae tabs work well)and left over food but there cant be too much left over food because it will rot afetr awhile. Buy some algae tablets for sure, You are better to feed a couple per day rather than a big weekly feed. They are not algae eaters, they are a vege based fish and they eat food that contains algae. You can also feed them fresh veges like cucumber, zuchini and mushroom. Stick a stainless fork to make the chunk sink and leave it overnight. Just take out the leftovers next day. No risk of overfeeding.

First find a rock about the size of the zucchini slice and a gum band use that to weigh down your zucchini. Fish are like people when it comes to food. Some like zucchini some do not. Try a slice of cucumber or another type of veggie. You just need to find what he likes that’s all. Do your goldies and platy eat it? (They will)
They are veggie eaters you just need to find a veggie they like to eat. Lettuce, spinach, cukes etc are all good choices here.
No you are right plecos don’t eat fish waste here.
