How do they slice a loaf of bread without squishing it?
December 8th, 2009 | by admin |The bread is so soft, but it’s still in it shape when it’s sliced. I make my own bread sometimes, but It tends to get smooshed when you try to slice it too thin.
Oh and I use a serrated for slicing–it just minimizes smooshing, but it doesn’t eliminate it.
at the factory, they use sharp circular blades to make the precision cuts. at home, you can either use a specialized bread knife, you can find one at any grocery store,or even an adjustable ham slicer

You should use a serrated knife. It’s specifically made to slice bread and it won’t squish it. Also use a sawing motion when slicing bread as opposed to just bearing down.

Use a blade with a saw edge and don’t use too much force. Just keep using sawing motion.

usually in a machine, the loaf sits on top of moving knives and the wieght of the loaf (with a little push, from the operator) cuts the loaf……try a serrated knife and don’t press on the loaf too hard, just lightly press with the knife and cut back and forth fast, (like a paper cut on a hand), once the crust is cut then its easier to keep cutting. continue to cut back and forth while pressing lightly…

Two words: light sabers.
Even a gentle sawing motion doesn’t quite do it, so therefore I have to believe there are legions of underpaid jedi slicing away at bread in bakeries, day in and day out.
Edit: TD? Really? LOL wow. I was just loafing around trying to raise the humor here. I didn’t deserve battered for it. No need to be a half-baked crusty sourdolt!

They have special machines to do that and that is why it does not come out smooshed.

use a SHARP serrated knife. sharpness is the key, as a sharp blade requires less force or pressure. that way you do not squish your bread.
