how to cure a golf slice?

April 17th, 2010 | by admin |

i played baseball from the age of 4 till i was 18 then i threw out my shoulder and can no longer play. i have played golf since age 14, i am not 23 and still swing a golf club like a baseball bat. i have tried everything… any ideas would be great

1.Are you swinging the club over the top of your head? i.e. coming over the top. The shoulder injury may be causing this to occur as well.

2. If you played baseball, that’s great! Try swinging that driver like a ball bat. Watch Jim Furyk. He loops the club inside at the top to prevent himself from going ‘over the top’ as I stated in in 1.. Try going on the web and find a video of Jim’s swing. This is a good drill to force you to hit it straight.
Heres a link that show how Jim keeps from slicing.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTuTrpWCZhU

3. Most likely the most critical advice that I can give you, is to have a pro take a look at how you are gripping the club. 9 out of 10 of the people that I see slicing, are gripping the club WRONG! Hole that puppy in your fingers. Your hands should also be ‘married’ to the point where you can hold a quarter between your hands without it falling out during your swing.

4.If you are right handed, try a drill where you put a towel under your right armpit during your swing at the range while practicing. Try to complete your swing without allowing the towel to fall out of your armpit. This is a common drill that I have seen V.J. Singh uses.

Have a real good golfer look at your swing, or a local pro may look at it for free. I can tell you, when I changed my grip(and the change is going to feel really weird to you at first, until you cook one straight as an arrow 300 hundred yards, then you will love the grip change).

And try (if you are right handed) backing up that right foot in your stance just a little, that will also promote a hook.

Good luck to you and good golfing!

If you really want to fix your slice, you MUST fix your grip first. get ben hogan’s book, five playing lessons, and learn the correct grip. without breaking down the swing, the best thing i can tell you, after you fix your grip, is to get a lesson, and SLOW DOWN YOUR TAKEAWAY/BACKSWING.

The baseball background isnt your problem, it is simply you need correct information on the grip.

Start with the grip. If you cannot do that, take up tennis.

    Good luck.

Golf is a rotational sport the encourages a weight forward follow through focus on getting your hips and weight to go forward often baseball players hang back and push slice the ball even with a decent backswing

I agree with every one on the grip issue super important! After grip the next biggest problem is called "chicken winging" where your right elbow hovers away from your body. when that occurs you have no choice but to swing from outside the plane at the top to inside the plane at the bottom . take a few practice swings where your only focus is to keep your right elbow touching your belt line . That will put you on a plane to swing from inside to out promoting a drawlike ball flight , same as towel drill answered earlier without using the towel (for those of us concious about looking silly). As for baseball playing : Baseball players usually hit the ball farther it is of no consequence to have played our pastime . My 8 year old nephew plays both golf and baseball and all i have to remind him of is saying " golf swing buddy" then he instinctively tucks his right elbow inside ! If you have your elbow in and still slicing its time to learn to rotate your hips in sync w/ your arms, with out a hip turn the ball will always go right , if you hook use less hips . Pretty simple huh? Simple in Philosophy difficult in mastery ! Go enjoy the course today as you won’t find better ways of spending the day
