Why do I slice it to the right on all my shots?

November 29th, 2009 | by admin |

I just started playing golf last week and I can drive about 250 when I hit a straight shot, but I can only hit it straight once every 5 or 6, otherwise it ends up on the fairway of the hole next to us, what am I doing most likely thats making it go right and mainly how can I fix it?

The reasons for a slice are to numerous to try to address here. My advice is a lesson from your local teaching pro. It will cure a lot and cost is minimal. especially in the frustration department =)

Your back swing in traveling outside the line of plane.when you start foreward swing it gives an outside to inside swing path departing right hand spin on ball at contact.Right hand spin equals right turn on ball or slice..To correct this slow baclswing somw and concentrate on straight easy flow foreward swing. Probably be best to have a course or range pro help you in stance and ball placement. Your swing is most described as a baseball swing….George

there may be something wrong with your stance or the way you are approaching the ball.. it takes a long time to get your swing right.. give it time read up on some golf magazines or look it up on the internet and do what is right for you.. i am no golf master.. i cant even hit it that far.. but that is what my dad usually tells me…. all i know is that 250 yards in the wrong direction is not as good a shorter shot that goes straight on the fairway

A slice can be caused by two main things. I’ve been playing golf for about 4-5 years and struggled with a slice during the first year and a half. Once I figured out my problem, (having an out-to-in swing path) I changed my swing and now am hitting the ball either straight or with a slight draw. One very common fault to cause a slice is an out-to-in swing path were the club is traveling across the target line from the outside producing clockwise spin on the ball causing the ball to go right. Also, even if your swing path is on plane, the club face may still be open at impact, which again imparts clockwise spin on the ball causing it to go right. To fix this, try strengthening your grip, or by closing the club face at address. A good rule of thumb is if the ball starts out left or right while curving, your swing path is at fault. However, if the ball goes straight at first and then curves right or left at the last second, then your swing path is fine yet the club face is open or closed at impact depending on which way the ball travels.

I hope this answers your question!

At the start of your back swing, you are opening the face of your driver. Whatever way the face of your driver is facing, that is the way the ball is going to go. You need to keep it square throughout your backswing and downswing. An idea to think of when playing is having the face of your club looking at the ball as long as possible.
