What golf clubs should i get???????????????

December 16th, 2009 | by admin |

I am 6 foot and shoot between 85 and 95 on a normal round. I love nike clubs but are these the right way to go? My natural shot is a slight slice but i think i have cured that now; well every 5 in 6 times anyway. I just need some help to get me hunting at the single figure handicaps. Oh i will give you a list of how far i hit clubs:

SW- 60-100
PW-100-140
9-130-145
8-130-150
7-145-160
6-160-175
5-175-200
4-180-200
3-185-205
5wood- 220
3wood- 220-270
Driver-245-310

P.s i know there are some strange yardages but i am basing it on wet and dry conditions.

Only YOU can answer this. I would make a list of possible club selections based upon your budget and your game. 85-95, you are probably should be looking at "Game-Improvement" Irons (based upon Golf Digest). These will be good clubs that are still very forgiving but starting to allow you to "work" a ball. If you feel you are a bit better then that and have developed a decent swing, then I would check out "Players" irons…these clubs are less forgiving but allow more working of the ball.
This is were your "blades" will be. I would stay away from 100% blades but rather go with a set that is still somewhat cavity backed. I would try and find a Forged club and not a cast club…much better feel. Take this list and go hit them all lots lots lots…the right set will speak for itself. This is very important because this will begin the process of you building your confidence in your new equipment. Regardless of what you choose, I suggest taking them to your local professional club fitter and have them customized to you. About 3-5 dollars per club, this too is very critical. Most manufactorers have a tolerance on Lie angles of plus or minus 2 degrees, way too much to leave.
I had mine done for the first time ever and it has been quite amazing. I wondered why I could crush both 7 and 5 irons but could never hit a decent 6 iron..why…it was bent wrong, within tolerance but at the far end…..like it was off nearly 2 degrees…..

Ping makes some nice forgiving irons. I just bought some G10s, and they are really nice. Ping also does a lot of custom fitting, so if you are looking for something long term that is a good thing to do. As for a driver, TaylorMade makes some good stuff, but at least swing a few to see what feels right.

What I would do: go to a dealer that will let you try the clubs first.

    I almost totally agree w/ Idez9.
Workable clubs would prob fit you best. About the forged, they feel great, but do they allow you to hit better, prob not. Mizuno are all forged and have cavity back and blades. Many of the other big companies like Callaway, Taylor Made, Titleist, etc have their own line of irons. However, the most important thing is to go and HIT the irons and pick one you like. At all the major stores, go get fitted and pick the clubs that are your size. I got mine at PGA superstore, and they fitted me. The cost of the fitting was $40, and they deducted the $40 from the set of irons I purchased. I’m sure the competitors will match this offer.
I’m a Callaway guy, so I went w/ the X-22 tours- cavity back w/ workability, but not forged
    Mizuno- MP series like 52
Titleist- I think it is the AP series
    Taylor Made – R9
    Ping- I15

My best advice, go spend a couple hours at the hitting bay w/ the different irons and pick the one that fits the best. I spent over 3 hours trying all the clubs. I almost went w/ Ping, but ended w/ Callaway. But I do have to admit, the Mizuno’s felt really good. Felt like butter coming off the head.
