(I’m 15) But I’ve been playing baseball for 11 years, so my golf swing is really messed up because of that, I’ve been able to fix a lot, but my slice is terrible. If I’m on a par 4 with a wide fairway I have to aim left of the fairway and I hate that. So any tips on how to combat the slice would be helpful.

was slicing the ball now i am pushing it. i can see my divoit is nowhere where i was aiming. how can i fix this and are there any drills or training aids which show u the ideal swing plane

While the swing plane is important, it is not the "root" of your problem (unless by “swing plane” you are actually talking about swing path; swing plane is the angle of inclination your body forms relative to the ball). Swing path is whether the club is traveling inside out, outside in, or straight at impact.

Let’s start with what must be happening at impact in terms of swing path (not swing plane) and club face and work backwards from there.

You didn’t say whether when you were slicing the ball you were also pushing it. That is, it started right and then curved further right. Or whether, it started straight and curved right, or it started left (a pull – and this all assumes you play the game right handed) and then curved right.

A clue to all of this is where your divot is facing relative to the target, which you say is offline but not in which direction.

Taken literally a "slice" starts left and then goes right. However, it would actually be more consistent with your current problem, that your "slice" actually started right, but perhaps not as far right as now. So I will assume that is what your slice did and would more specifically be called a "push slice."

Both have in common that the club is traveling across your intended target line from in to out at impact. With the push, your clubface is square to your line of swing, but not to your target line. With the push slice your club is also traveling across your intended target line from in to out at impact, but the face is open to the line of your swing.

Now, the quick fix for this would be to take a look at your grip and experiment with a couple of changes. First of all, you need to make sure that the club is placed into your hands so that the two hands can work as one, and the correct positioning and pressure points are applied. Consult a good instruction book for that, as it is too complex to be described here briefly.

The important thing though for this quick fix is to start with the V’s of both hands pointing to the middle of your right shoulder. Then try gradually shifting both hand the same relative amount clockwise (to the right) with the extreme point being both V’s pointing a bit (not much) to the outside of your right shoulder. This is called a “strong” grip and somewhere between the starting point (middle of right shoulder) and extreme point (just outside of right shoulder) it should, for the most part solve your problem. When it does, note as precisely as you can where that position is and repeat it to see if you get similar results. If you do, then you have your quick fix.

Some might argue that the quick fix is part of the long term solution of finding the right grip for your particular body makeup as it will encourage other correct positions of the body. While everyone is unique and thus some individual adjustments may need to be made, I don’t completely agree.

I think that the majority of people may have to make some slight adjustments to a standard grip. And if you read enough instructional books, or take enough lessons you will find that the positioning that some teachers recommend will vary slightly, which is their attempt to put their hands around (so to speak what they think is the best positioning for the most people in spite of their individual physical peculiarities.

So yes, you need to experiment with the grip and make slight adjustments based upon the feedback your ball flight may be giving you. But you can’t rely on that being the answer to learning how to consistently hit the ball straight; you need to make sure that you are learning to ingrain the true tried and tested golf fundamentals into your swing. And for that you need instruction (or dedicated self study that is done productively), lots of practice and patience. The one real truth of golf is that there are no shortcuts and “quick fixes” to a fundamentally sound and repeatable golf swing.

Im about 5′8" and ive been golfing since i was 8. im not obsessive over golf but im starting to play alot with friends for something to do after school. im a decent golfer but im not consistant at all. I have dunlop irons and a wedge that are probly over 10 years old, a taylor made(i forgot what kind) driver(although a newer one) a 9 wood, and an oddessey putter. my parents can afford good clubs but im waiting for xmas bc i feel bad for making them spend money)they just spent 180 dollars on a bag and shoes. My driver feels a little too big for me and i ALWAYS slice with it. I really want to fix the slice and i know that its not the club except the club just feels pretty big for me. So my question is, i need a new set of irons, wedges, and maybe a new driver that will last me a long time and hopefully improve my game. I also try to stay away from ping bc i dont really like the way they play. Ive tried them
wow u guys are fags

Well, it sounds like you don’t want to spend insane amounts of money on new clubs, but you don’t want a cheapo set that you find at a garage sale. I would reccommend some mid-range nike irons. Such as the Victory Red Full Cavity irons or maybe the Nike Slingshot irons. Whatever you choose make sure ot works for you. Keep your putter it’s a nice one. I would reccommend dome cleveland wedges or Titleist Vokey wedges. As for the driver, you may want to keep that club, you said it is newer. The club isn’t too long for you at that height by the way, in fact the longer the driver, the longer you hit it. So I would stick with your driver and to correct the slice maybe stand closer to the ball, and if that doesn’t work than try to swing easier, trying to kill the golf ball will 99.99% of the time result in a slice for amateurs. If that doesn’t work than try to grip looser, don’t use a "death grip" as this is part of killing the golf ball, if all of this fails than I would see a instuctor on how to correct your slice because it could be so many other things.

P.S. For standing closer to the golf ball, I don’t mean by much, I mean 1 inch or 2 at the most.

P.S.S For your slice you may want to try the Taylormade Draw driver as this will correct your slice or a driver like the R9 with an adjustable head. This will almost guarantee you hit it straighter. But don’t use equipment to fix your slice alway try a pro first because a pro for a half an hour is a lot cheaper than a 400.00 driver that you would’ve found out you don’t need.

Hope thos Helps!

I am right-handed, relatively athletic, and have done well at different sports such as soccer and tennis. Also when I started golfing I seemed to hit the ball straighter than I do know. I need to fix my slice, but am not sure what to do. Help!

The reason you are slicing the ball is because your club face is ‘open’ at impact. This means the club face is pointing slightly away from your body when you bring it through the golf ball. What happens then is that this open club face, as it comes through the ball, creates left-to-right or clockwise spin on the ball. The result is a ball flight that may begin straight, but that veers towards your right. Since you are a right-handed golder this is what is causing your slice.

To cure your golf slice you need to make sure that the club face is ’square’ with the golf ball at impact. There are a number of ways you can do this. Start your swing with the club face ’square’ to the golf ball and begin by not taking a full backswing. The shorter your backswing the less room for error as you bring the club back to the ball. Practice this swing beginning with a very short backswing and getting it progressively longer. The result will be more solid control when your club face impacts the golf ball. Usually, the slower, more controlled backswing drill helps many of my students fix their slice.

Hopefully it will work for you too!
