Would it be okay to feed my 2 male rats apple slices?
November 10th, 2009 | by admin |I’m having an apple right now and they pretty much eat what i eat. Like last night i gave them some leftovers from dinner which included lettuce and corn.
Sorry i’m fairly new to being a rat mommy I’ve only had them 2 weeks now so i’m still learning.
They can have a piece of apple but you cannot let them have the seeds. These contain cyanide and are harmful.
EDIT: Don’t ever be sorry for asking questions!
It’s great that you did, because now you know something important to your rattykids. & Since you’re a new rat momma, I thought I’d edit my post and recommend a great site for you (one that I used frequently when I didn’t know what I was doing and still use today). http://www.ratforum.com
There are so many rat-smart people there, it’s wonderful. Good luck!!

Absolutely; I feed my rat apple slices all the time. As long as they don’t get a hold of the seeds (poisonous!), they’ll be just fine
Almost any fruit or veggie it fine to give your rats. But there are still a few to be aware of, so if you’re not sure, do a Google search on it. The only one I can think of at the moment is oranges; male rats should not be fed oranges. There is a chemical in them that can lead to, I believe, pancreatic cancer. But most other veggies are fine

I never heard that the small amounts of cyanide in a apple seeds can harm rats, and in fact a very experienced breeder I am in contact with told me to hang whole apples from the cage roof as a challenge for my ratties! They been getting apple every day over the past year and they’ve never been ill, not one of all 11!
Fruit and veg is very good for rats and they should have a portion of it every day! I give mine carrots, brocolli, sweatcorn, curly kale, spring greens, cooked brown rice, wholemeal bread and apples, a mix of most each day! Along with their dry food and a small portion of senior dog food such as Nature’s Choice, Nature’s Diet etc. which the rats LOVE!!
Hope I helped!
Lloyd!
