How do you keep apple slices from turning brown?

January 18th, 2010 | by admin |

I always want to pack them for my daughters preschool snack but know they won’t last that long.

Lemon Lime soda (like Sprite or 7 Up) works really well and doesn’t really change the flavor of the apple.

I have also used apple juice. Apple juice works best if the apples will be eaten within 4 hours.

Slice the apples and just quickly run through the liquid. If you let them sit, the more flavor they will absorb. I also put mine in a plastic, air tight container instead of a plastic bag.

Not sure if this is right but I think a teaspoon of lemon juice may work, I saw it online. I suppose it could be worth a try.

Just dip them in some lemon juice, it will stop the apple slices from turning brown.

Dunk them in a little lemon juice. Some folks mix it with water. I’m not sure how well that works, though.

Just take a lemon slice & squeeze over the white part of the apple. Does your daughter like lemon?

Lemon Juice does work, it helps but you need to make sure you dont pile it all on it.

Adding a little water helps the flavor, so maybe mix a little in?

ohh.. i did this science experiment in 5th grade

you have to add a little bit of water mixed with lemon juice on them

and then completely lock all the air out when you put them in the ziploc bag

there are also apple slices you can buy at the grocery store. my mom bought them for us and they’re not like gross or anything

so it might be easier just to buy those

The browning of the apple is being caused by exposure to oxygen. Slicing the apple and putting the slices in a large bowl of water with a little lemon juice. The water keeps the oxygen away and the lemon juice bleaches any brown that has already started.

You could try lightly coating the outside of the apple in lemon juice. You also need to package the slices in an air tight way. Those vacuum containers (the ones where you can remove the air) would be the best bet.
