Apple pie: Should the slices of apple be thick or thin?

February 13th, 2010 | by admin |

When making an apple pie, how do you prefer to slice the fruit?
Thanks, cheese is great; but NOT Parmesan. Cheddar is the way to go, and a traditional favourite.

It depnds on the variety if you are using a cooking variety such as bramley you can get away with large chunks, but if you use an eating apple such as cox or braeburn then you want far thinner slices to ensure they cook.

Thin slices are better. If their too thick they’ll slide out as your cutting it and it becomes a tad messy.

I prefer them thick so they are still chunky when it’s cooked

If the apples are soft then thick ,,if they are crispy then medium…. never thin. If you want the slice easier to serve and fork cut then dice the apples.
    Enjoy,

Uniform 1/4" slices work for me. I’ve tried 1/8" slices and they get too soggy for my taste. It all depends on the texture you want.

I found a wonderful metal melon-baller (plastic ones buckle with the firm apple flesh) that works as a great apple corer — simple and fast! I then lay each "cheek" on its flat side and slice straight down like an onion. If my apples are larger, I give it a slice or two crosswise, too. (Imagine a "C" shaped section of apple sliced into three).

I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but cheese makes a great addition to apple pie.

For a wonderful topping, mix flour, sugar, butter and a combination of grated (not the powdered store-bought kind) parmesan cheese and cheddar cheese. Mix until crumbly.

    Here’s a sample mixture:
    1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
    1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
    1/2 cup flour
    1/3 cup sugar
    1/3 cup butter or margarine

For a different spin on it, try one with cheese in the crust:
[One of the reviewers commented that the liquid in the pie did not gel... if this happens, add a teaspoon of cornstarch to your sugar-cinnamon mixture]

Good luck! Have fun and think loving thoughts as you bake. It makes does make a difference in your finished product :)

If you have a visitor and your apple pie is small you must slice it in a thin way.But if you have a large apple pie you can slice it thick. But my best choice is to slice it thick.Because if it is thick it would be more delicious and no need for one by one to take.
